just have been through hurricane IRMA ran my proudly owned em6500sx 2 hours prior to incoming storm,ran lke a champ even with a light load,(still had power at this time)power goes out went to start up the beast and it sticks the intake valve and bend the push rod!!! less than 30 hours and run synthetic 10/30 mobil 1.

Honda makes portable generators for play, home and work. The EM6500S is in the category of home use although it is Pro Grade! Although it is not as quiet as the comparable one for play, it is still extremely quiet and comes at a much lower price. It does not have the OSHA requirements the work model has for construction sites but is perfectly safe, and that comparable model does not have electric start. 

It has all the features you would want; Electric Start with Recoil Backup, Long Run Time, Idle Under No Load Switch on/off, IAVR Voltage Regulation, Fuel Gauge, Low Oil Shutdown, Individual circuit breakers for each outlet, Folding Handles, Wheels, Optional Remote Start, Optional Lift Hook, More.

This unit is worth every penny for it's obvious superior quality! It’s power quality exceeds that of Most Portable and many Permanent Standby units! Because of it's power quality it has no problem with running electronics.

I did a test run and it had no problem with running; Fridge, Freezer, Water Pump, Sump Pump, Furnace, Washing Machine, Gas Clothes Dryer, Gas Stove Ignition, Lighting, TV, Dish Box, DVD Player, Internet Modem, iPhone, Cordless Phone, Laptop, Digital Alarm Clock, . It will run the 3000W Electric Water Heater, but I chose to select between that and the other loads just to take it easy on it. I installed the generator interlock bracket with the back-feed breaker on my breaker panel which allows us to select which breakers (circuits) my wife and I want to run. With a few motions of her hand she can start and use it with little effort safely!    

Just tried testing my unit yesterday, and the electric starter would not work.  I turn the key to ignition and hold for several seconds and it just sits there. The recoil ignition works perfectly though, starts on the first pull every time and the engine runs great.  So it's not one of those stale fuel problems (I use fuel stabilizer anyway) or low oil, bad spark plug, etc....It's the electric start.  What should I do?

I like this generator and it is almost out of warranty but when I went to unscrew the two screws to clean the spark arrestor, the screws were over  tightened from the factory and that stripped the 2 screws so I had to bring it back to the dealer. Honda would not cover the repair because I removed the screws which were over tightened from the factory. Take it I removed the screws they could have still covered the repair due to their installation of the screws, they charge enough money for these generators they could have covered it under a good will policy.

I got this last year after an ice storm took out our power in March 2014. My old generator was so loud and obnoxious, I had to use hearing protection to get near it. So it was time for an upgrade. The old one was strictly 120 V, this one has an L14-30 120/240v outlet for hook up to the house panel through an inlet box, with an Interlock kit and back feed breaker installed by an electrician, and inspected by the city.

I have been starting it every month of so to keep it ready, as well as using a trickle charger for the battery.

Last week the power went out and finally I could try out this generator. It was needed for about 6 hours, after a snow storm, and it started right up with the electric starter, and it hooked up to my 30 amp cable and the house with no issues. The power is measured using some inductive meters which shows the balance, and my 4000 sq foot house with the lights (mostly LEDs and CFLs), 2 TVs, 2 computers and 3 furnaces all fired up, we used about 3500 watts. When our microwave was on, it went up to about 4500 watts, but this generator didn't break a sweat.

You have to watch the total of course, but there is the capability of using 6500 watts for 30 minutes, and 7000 watts for 10 seconds, with 5500 watts continuous.  It might be possible to use the dryer or oven, or possibly one Central A/C unit, but only one of these and not anything else at the same time.

Our electronics had no issues with the clean power put out with this Honda, and we used in the range of 3 gallons during this 6 hour period. the 10 hour run time with 50% power seems close.

It will ramp down the RPMs and the noise when you only run 1 amp or less, but otherwise it runs at full speed. The noise level is tolerable, about like a mower, at about 72 dB, pretty loud at night, but your neighbors will understand. If you want really quiet then you have to go with the inverters, and they cost a lot more.

I added an inductive hour meter so I could measure the time use, for oil changes and the like.

All in all, I have no regrets with my Honda.

I like the 3 year warrantee, mine came with an extra year. And your credit card might add even more.

Bought this generator a day before Sandy hit.  We were one of the first to lose power as Sandy's winds had begun to move on shore.  The generator ran for eight days straight till our power was restored.  It powered the entire house without a hitch.  We were careful to not use larger appliances at the same time so we'd avoid popping a fuse.  Only issue we had...finding gas to power her especially towards the latter part of the outage.  We only turned her off for the oil changes.  A Great Machine! Well worth the price. 

I bought this generator on the brink of Hurricane Sandy back in October 2012. I run a 3400 sq. ft. home, meeting the basic minimum needs for days. Keeps refrigerators running, sump and well pumps operable, water hot, ac and fans running at night, and special emergency LED lighting throughout the whole home. One fill up runs all night when its hot, and throughout the day during peak times when we are home and need the electric resource. It is so nice to function at a level of safety and comfort during power outage and/or weather emergencies. If you plan smart and think through your basic needs, you will be pleasantly surprised when matched up to the right power generating source. This has been a good purchase and really gets the job done. Our electrician helped us decide what unit would meet our needs, wired the house for connecting the generator, and provided sustainable power for days if needed. I would highly recommend a Honda generator to anyone looking for an efficient, reliable backup source. I am partial to Honda power equipment. We have many times shown our neighborhood why Honda is the best.
