Well, after one use, I can already say that this is by far the best mower I have ever owned. I got the best mower in the store. I believe this is the top of the line minus the electric start. I live in California where we have short warm winters and the backyard is problematic for me. Grass will grow a foot or more in a week with the rain. My old mower would not get through it without clogging, stalling, leaving clumps all over the place.
I was shocked when I tried the Honda. It blasted through damp foot high grass without leaving a single clump on the ground, without clogging and without bogging down. When I was done, I wanted to keep cutting the grass, and it is usually something I HATE doing. This mower cost twice as much as my last one, but in my opinion it is worth every penny. It's probably overkill for my yard, but it is making a chore a pleasure.
Pull Start...almost effortless.
Self Propel...it's really fast....on the higher settings you are jogging...I keep it on the second to lowest.
Bagging...nice wide opening that does not clog! This thing is like a vacuum. I don't even have to sweep the driveway.
Mulching...have not tried yet.
Power...plenty with some to spare.

Took maybe 15 minutes (mostly making sure I was doing steps in order). The bag assembly was a bit difficult, probably taking most of this time. Had to cut the box to roll the mower out. The handle set up, adding oil and gas was a cinch...maybe a couple of minutes.
Once all of this was done it was ready to start. Fired off on first pull and purred like a kitten. That's what I call a good beginning.
Grass cutting starts when things dry out a bit. So it's a little early to rate the main event. But this model has a lot of really good features (like blade stop, mulch to bag and everything in between with one (on mower) feature and variable speed control independent of throttle). Looks to be the best self propelled I've every bought.

I ordered this lawnmower on October 15, 2017 online from Home Depot's website. I had just purchased a new home and wanted to replace my old lawnmower with a new one. All of the positive reviews prompted me to spend a little more money and buy this one. I picked it up from the local Home Depot on October 21 and stored it in my garage until I could get a chance to use it. That chance came on December 03, 2917. It was 63 degrees outside and I decided to cut the grass. I assembled the mower and after adding oil and gasoline I fired it up. It started right up on the first pull. No effort at all. I then followed the instructions to engage the blade control lever and then the clutch control lever. I walked up and down a patch of grass a few times and noticed that the grass was not being cut. I fooled around with it a few more hours while checking on the mower operation online at youtube.com before I noticed that the yellow button on top of the blade control lever did not stay engaged when I pushed down no matter how often I tried. The clutch connecting the yellow button to the blades was not connected !!! I could not return to Home Depot as it was past their 30 day return policy and I was told that I would have to deal with Honda directly to get this taken care of under warranty. I don't own a truck and now must deal with the hassle of securing one and taking this mower to a local service center. It is my fault for not using the lawnmower sooner otherwise I would have discovered the issue and retuned to Home Depot. As it is, I am now stuck with a 700 dollar lawnmower that doesn't cut grass, that is 3 months old and has a major issue right out of the box before I can cut one blade of grass. What else is wrong with this mower that I have yet to discover? Now here it is on January 27th of 2018 and I get a call from the service center. They have fixed the problem and it will cost me 46 dollars for repairs and 28 dollars to have the mower delivered to me from the service center since I don't have a truck to pick it up. WHAT ????? I haven't cut one blade of grass with this mower yet. I have read reviews of this mower on other sites and this is not the first time this particular problem with the unconnected clutch has occurred on new purchases.

When my lawn mower died, I started researching a suitable replacement and settled on the Honda HRX217HYA. After driving over an hour away from home to pick it up, I finally found what probably will be the last lawn mower I'll ever own. I took it home, opened the box, and to my surprise, the only thing that was in the box was the lawn mower and the oil for the engine. I called the store (Home Depot) where I purchased it from and talked to Joseph in Customer Service and told him that the paper work was missing from the box. He provided me with two options: 1) I could drive all the way back to the store and he will printout a copy of the instruction manual or 2) I can go to any Home Depot and pickup the paperwork. I don't think either one of those options would suffice. If I spend my hard earned money on a premium lawn mower, I should receive a complete product. I believe that if I provided full payment that I should be provided with all of the items and not some printout or photocopy that I have to hunt down myself.
With that being said, I'm VERY disappointed with my buying experience, which I believe tarnished my overall experience and put a damper on the excitement that I initially had. So if I can get a copy of the included paperwork I will really appreciate it (Paul Johnson 9116 Banleigh Lane, Clinton, MD 20735).
After I finally figured out how to put everything together, the lawn mower performed marvelously. This is hands down the best lawn mower I have ever owned. The reason why I didn't give a 5 rating is due to my horrible buying experience.

I purchased this lawn mower as it was top of the line with all the features I needed. You could set the speed you want it to run and further adjust it using a lever, or use it like a manual push mower if you want some exercise. Works excellent in all modes. Easy to maintain and the build looks sturdy after a summer of usage.
It does not cut the blades clean though. I observed fraying of the tips from day one. I returned it after first use and got a replacement. The replacement did not perform much better either. I checked the blades and they were brand new (as expected on a brand new model). I am living with it since the mower seems to be very good otherwise and durable. If it had a sharp cut, I would call it the best walk behind lawn mower.

This is one great lawn mower. It has Plenty of power, yet very quiet compairatively and the drive train is smooth and pulls well up hills. A bit heavy to pull back on in tight corners.
I replaced an 8 year old manual powerd Craftsman which I thought was a very good mower. There is a huge difference in the way they cut. I used the bag on my first mow on 4-5 inch tall bremuda grass, and wow does it hold some serious weight, the blades of grass were cut so fine, that it really packs in the grass. Be Careful that you dont over fill it, as the weight can be hefty to lift.
My Second mowing, I used the mulch mode and zipped through my acre of yard in no time. You dont really see any grass trail as you did with the Craftsman.
My Overall first impression, is that it's a very good cutting mower with plenty of power and drive to go though tall grasses easily.
i would reccomend this model or any Honda Lawn Mower for that matter.
Spend the money its worth it.

This mower worked great for 2 years. Then the transmission started slipping so I brought it back. The dealer has now had it 5 weeks and says that Honda will not honor the 60 Month warranty. They say it is normal wear and tear.

After owning a Toro recycler personal pace self propelled for 6 years, I was not happy with the drive system. I worked good on concrete, but when pulling was really needed, I had to help it to much. After much looking and discernation as to self propelled mowers available, the hydrostatic drive on the Honda appealled to me, even though the price was over double for what I had spent on the Toro 6 years prior.
So far I have used it twice. Cutting thick and tall zoysia grass. Pros: can use regular gas with 10% methanol, started on first rope pull each time, easy to pull rope start, the variable speed lever has good settings, drive mechanism really pulls good-uphill with full basket, has large basket for catching clippings.
Cons: If you have a lot of turning and twisting and backing up, the operation will take some getting used too.
So far I am happy with my purchase, but have only had it less than one week.

Everything was great on this lawnmower except the blade control lever would not engage. The metal of the lever was deformed so the clutch would not engage when I pushed the yellow blade control button. I had to use a pair of pliers to bend the end of the lever metal to free the obstacle.
I had bought two other Honda lawnmowers before and did not encounter any quality issues. I thought about taking the bright new lawnmower to the local Honda dealer to repair. But I could not wait because the grass was very long in my yards. So I took the risk of repairing myself. Fortunately it worked although I scratched the paint on the metal.

I only got 25 years out of a HRM15HXA. I mean, it still runs, but the hydrostatic drive is making a clanking noise. It probably needs more fluid, but I am tired of this one.
No kidding. 25 years and still running. Original engine with a new carb. No smoke, etc. It HAS been transferred to a HRM14SX deck because I shattered the original. The blade caught a bungie cord deep in the grass and slung the metal end against the deck.
Unlike many of you, I knew what I was getting into, but I was also familiar with using the system.
It's heavy. Learn to dance with it. Let it do the work. It can take it.
It starts first time every time. I like the auto-choke much better than the manual choke.
The built in mulching system is a champ. Try replacing a lost mulch plug from an earlier system? Good luck with that.
It goes much further on a tank of gas.
The microcut blades do in fact seem to shred everything smaller and pack it in tighter. It goes much further between bag empties.
It will adjust as fast or as slow as you want.
It has an additional height adjustment over it's predecessor.
The deck is shatterproof (!)
It has a 5 year warranty if registered.
It powers through the thickest, deepest grass
I am pretty sure I just bought my last lawnmower.

I had one small issue with the carb out of the box, but it was a quick fix. The mower runs great, starts up first pull, very powerful, mulches super fine, handles good, but it's got no suction whatsoever while mulching. The result is it leaves stragglers, uncut blades of grass that were bent over or not standing up perfectly straight. The areas the wheels go over are the worst, as they lay the grass down, then the mower is unable to fully stand them up to cut them. I can mow over sticks and rocks without fear, because this mower simply won't pick them up.
It's a bit better when bagging or cutting fairly short, but I live in northern Indiana and I want to mulch and cut high. I've tried many fixes, including verifying the RPMs, tilting the mower deck forward or back, opening the clip director chute some, mowing very slowly, new blades - but the results are always similar.
After doing a lot of research online, I believe the older versions of this mower are considerably better for suction, many with older HRX217 owners say their mower actually has a lot of suction while mulching - which is something no one could say about my fairly new HRX217 (purchased fall 2016). There are many revisions to the HRX217, my theory is perhaps they tweaked the deck and it inadvertently removed all suction from the design - but it could be many things. I hope Honda recognizes this issue and determines a fix somehow, I've been hearing more and more people complaining about this same issue recently.
I've attempted to contact Honda directly, they refuse to talk and simply direct me to my nearest dealer, who has been no help at all - the mower is working fine mechanically. In the mean time, my neighbor's HRR216 cuts significantly better, and I'm feeling cheated out of the extra $329 I spent on the HRX.

I purchased this mower in January and thanks to the long Florida drought I used it for just the fourth time today. This is my first Honda mower, but I have driven Honda cars and SUV's exclusively since 1990 so I am very familiar with Honda quality. So here are the positives so far:
The cut is first rate. I have the mower height set at the next to highest setting possible as I like my grass longer, plus it's healthier for the grass.
The controls are located in a good spot and are comfortable to operate.
The ability to select bag, mulch,or someplace in between is a great feature.
While the gas tank could be a bit larger, I appreciate being able to mow my small lawn on one tank of fuel. The engine appears to be very efficient.
This mower starts on the first pull every time. That is priceless!
The engine noise is much lower than my neighbor's walk behind.
Now for some "opportunities for improvement":
I purchased this mower in January of this year. Brand new, in the box, and never opened. Imagine my great surprise when I found out that it was actually built in 2014!! Why did the dealer sell me an old stock mowervwhen I wanted a brand new model?
I have noticed that the drive wheel will not drive the mower at times, but the wheel continues to spin. Is this a defect, or is only one wheel supposed to drive the mower? With the mower height set at the next to the highest level, I know the mower isn't bogging down due to that. I have actual to push the mower several times to get it going. Having a serious back injury, I do not like this at all.
So to summarize, the mower cuts well, is fuel efficient, quiet, has a lot of valuable features, and is a quality machine. The two items I listed as areas for improvement concern me, if I'm being honest. Were I asked to recommend this mower I would do so, albeit hesitantly.

This mower is an additional one to supplement my 28 year old Honda mower that still starts on the first pull of the starter cord! The old Honda is very dependable; the only repair requiring the dealer technician was a broken shifting cable to the transmission.
Due to my property and its topography, that makes moving a mower a real chore, I need 2 mowers. I've had several of the $100 cheap mowers but they don't last and are not dependable. My first Honda was the reason I bought a second one. The features and controls on the new HRX217HYA are the same as my old Honda. If this new mower works anything like the old one I'll be very pleased.
I also get very good service from my Honda dealer; I prefer doing business with local folks.

Replaced 11-Year Old Honda MowerModel Reviewed: HRX217HYA Friday, June 2, 2017
Broken Arrow, OK Type of use: Residential
My 11-year old HRX mower gave up the ghost this week, so it was time to replace it. I replaced it with the same model, and can offer the following observations after my first mowing with it:
-- This one rolls much smoother.
-- I like the way the folding handle was redesigned...much easier to use now.
-- No more choke position on the throttle control...hopefully I won't miss it. (LOL)
There are a couple of things I wish:
-- In over 10 years, this mower has essentially remained the same. Seems odd to me that Honda's not been able to come up with anything substantially better in that period of time.
-- I wish it had a mower deck washout port, as I wouldn't have to flip it over to clean underneath.
-- The deck height levers haven't changed. While the deck height was easy to adjust before I used it the first time, I'm fairly certain it will be difficult after a few uses. The levers are too short to easily move the wheels up/down the adjustment slots.
-- It's still too expensive...hundreds more than any other residential mower out there.
-- Still no AWD.
-- Still no oil drain plug.
-- Clip director still doesn't completely seal grass clippings from entering the discharge area when the knob is all the way over to the mulch position.
Despite the above, it's still the best residential mower out there. I consider over 10 years of life a sign of a well made product.

While I have only used this lawn mower one time I must say I am excited to be able to go use it again. I actually bought a zero turn lawn mower which I love riding but I have some steep hills and to be honest it is horrible on the hills as the rear wheels want to spin too much trying to turn. Plus I have some areas it is difficult to mow around so I wanted a push mower. I selected the Honda due to all of the (1) great reviews. Now I know why. Out of the box it was so easy to get set up. (2) YES, it did start on the very first pull as has no choke to mess with. Loved that! I also purchased this mower because (3) it did not have a side discharge to shoot grass into the street (as I like to alternate directions so the grass does not continually lay in one direction), or into the landscaped areas, etc. Love that feature for sure. (4) The ability to "blend" the amount of grass into the bag/mulched. (5) Hydrostatic drive is a real treat to use. (6) The feature of not having to restart to briefly stop mowing plus the engine speed control. (7) the fold down handle for storage is also quite nice. (8) Rear wheel drive for my hills...it worked flawlessly and made it very easy to mow hills.
Thank you Honda for such a fine mower.

Although it was at the high end of the price point I wanted to spend, I have only used it for a month and it is worth every penny. This mower has a quality build, is quiet, quick, and cuts amazingly well. I've used it a handful of times so far on my Rental Property and my own lawn. The HRX2175HYAA is really light and sturdy, making it easy to transport. Also, I have had a pressure washer since 2006 with a Honda engine, which I take care of, and it starts flawlessly every time. Hoping this mower will last just as long and beyond. Looking into Honda's modular trimmer system next.

We got as far as assembling the mower as our grass didn't need to be cut yet. This mower is a replacement for our John Deere (17 years) which decided to die in the middle of mowing. Borrowed our neighbors mower to finish lawn. Looked at the internet to see what was rated the best. This Honda was the best. Located the store (Home Depot) and purchased it. It started right up. Looking forward to using it when it is time to mow again. If I am allowed I will add another comment once I put it to actual use. Love it so far.

Great lawn mower. I was a little concerned about it mowing up steep slopes as I have several and a hilly terrain. I chose this model after reading a review by another owner that recommended the HYA model with the hydrostatic transmission for it being able to handle steep slopes better than the VYA model. I am glad that I chose this model as it powers itself up the steep slopes. The lawnmower I replaced this with I would have to help it up the steep hills (push) or otherwise it's rear wheels would spin in place. This machine is a little heavier than my previous mower but that is what it takes to get up the hills.
I like all of the features especially the mulching capabilities. I used to bag the grass clippings with my previous mower but this mower does such a great job on mulching that I have been mulching 100% saving all of the time and work.
The only improvement that I would recommend looking into would be the use of the of the power clutch. My previous lawn mower (different brand) the power clutch handle was within grasping grip. It was easier to power up 4-6 FT hills and then release to lower the mower. This model you have to keep one of your hands to the side to push the handle. Luckily I have larger hands and I can reach it with my thumb, it takes a little bit of getting use to it. This is the reason for the 4 star ease of use, otherwise I am very happy with the lawn mower and would recommend it.

I'm very pleased with my purchase of this lawnmower. I like the ease in which my lawnmower starts on the first start. I like the fact that I can let the motor continue to run while I empty the grass clippings. I like the ease in which the grass catcher is easy to remove from the rear discharge guard. The option of being able to either mulch or catch the grass with ease is a great option to have.
My son recommended this lawnmower to me and I would absolutely recommend the Honda Lawn Mower to anyone looking to purchase a lawnmower.

I have been a fan of another brand for 20 years. when it came time to purchase another mover I did my home work. Being 71 years young I need one that will last and must be easy to operate. Searching the web and reading reviews and actually visiting stores that had the different brands I settled on my Honda. I have not been disappointed. the Honda stars on first pull with no priming. The cut is terrific and the ability to select what amount will be bagged and mulched is the best feature. The mulched grass is so fine that I could not even see it. Unlike the other brand, the Honda packs the bag with clippings. The self propelled feature is a must with the contour of my yard and it will go from turtle to the rabbit and it maintains the set speed. I am happy I settled on the Honda because I am definitely not disappointed.

The 190CC engine went right through areas in my lawn that my previous mower would bog down, and leave piles of clumps. Additionally the multiple speed options really helped during parts of my yard that require a lot of turns, as well as the long stretches that I wanted to move faster in. I love the feature that stops the blade rotation but keeps the engine running! When I bag later in the year, I will love that even more. Great mower, only wish it wasn't so pricey, but it clearly separated from the rest of the mowers I considered.

I bought the HRX217HYA as a replacement for my 30 year old HR215 which finally gave way to old age.
I know how well these mowers are made, having 30 years of trouble free operation, but I was very surprised as to how much better the new model performs. It apparently has more power, and its ability to lift grass and leaves off the ground is amazing. The ability to select bagging, mulching, or a variable proportion of each is, to me, a very useful option.
It carries a premium price, but I believe it is worth it because of its premium performance.

I'll look like a fool posting five stars on everything. I'll knock one star off for how it turns. Its fairly heavy, and slightly cumbersome in sharp turns. Of course, the machine is very stable in a straight line, and nothing knocks it off course. This mower replaced my Honda Harmony that I bought in 2006. The old one is still running, but ended up with transmission issues. I mention it only because this mower has the larger, more powerful 190 engine, and it is amazing. My lawn is very thick. Its some special low water blend. Thats wonderful, until it rains and we get too much water. It then grows into this nightmarish, thick thing that my older Harmony just wont go through. This mower went through this grass with zero issue. Yes, its more expensive than others, but its quiet, the bag design is simple and tough, and this is the mower to have, if you possibly can. Its very quiet. Modern regulations, Im sure, but it is still very powerful, even at my 5000ft altitude.

Weekend warrior's ... This is a good follow-up to the last Honda I owned for 23 years of service, the original plastic deck Honda...believe it was a HSX. Two lawn mowers in a lifetime... The last plastic deck Honda I owned (first year produced cracked in the left front...wish it was lifetime warranted...new one is) withstood my second son not putting oil in it post a change for 10 minutes, and lasted 3 more years....or it may have gone to 30 years. I was able to re-in force the deck with metal pannels...to keep going... I was even able to rotate the tires with the gears...re-melted on, backs wore out.
Found this new HRX at Home Depot on model transition... Great Deal... Again... Quadracut is great, and the newer model has that new bagging shifter, and unlimited speeds..vs just 3.
Great Mower... Clean cut if you keep the blades sharp and balanced.
The best thing about this mower.. It is quiet, and cuts well, and runs incredibly well. Simple change oil twice a season, keep balanced blades sharp, and use fresh gas.....the old one could have lasted a lifetime.

Everything is as expected. I really like the mower and took one mowing to get used to the levers.
Only thing I dislike is the bag. It doesn't seal well and grass accumulates on inside around top and when I take off to empty theirs lots of grass that falls on sidewalk where I stop to MT. Maybe a better design would help. Also had hard time restarting maybe due to I'm not familiar with it yet.
Other than that I'd buy it again. I like it.

Reviewed after first use: Purchased from MowersDirect.com and was delivered 2 days later. After unboxing and assembly I cut the yard. Grass was higher than normal so I decided to try out partial mulch/partial bagging. Set Clip Deflector to middle position. The cut was great and the mower never bogged down at all. Seemed to be getting more bagged clippings than anticipated so I kept moving more to a mulch only setting. Still seemed like a lot of clippings were ending up in the bag. I filled 2 garbage bags full and usually I end up with 3 full bags.
The mower is quieter than the 8hp Snapper it is replacing but not much quieter than the 23 year old Toro Recycler. The bag seems to hold quite a bit more than the bag on the snapper. Don't know if that it is being packed in better or what but much less stopping and emptying. Don't know if this is a plus or minus, but I finished the yard and the bag was jammed and the chute was jammed and I never noticed. Hence it had to be mulching the final part of the yard without dropping clumps.
The controls take some getting used to. Definitely have 1 hand on top and 1 hand on the side. Looking at it, it won't matter which. I used left hand on the side to hold the brake clutch and right hand to hold the drive clutch bale. While not difficult, it is weird and I think the controls could be designed better. I like the controls on the VYA model but wanted the hydrostatic transmission.
I need to keep testing the clip deflector settings, but it seems like it bags more than it should or you would think. I also need to test straight mulching.
I like the handle positions and it folds down easy just by taking the pressure off the handle and rotating the little knobs. Even the wife can pull it off. So if space is and issue it stores fairly small.

I had a GCV160-powered mower for a dozen years. When it finally became apparent that the Honda motor was going to outlast all the other parts (wheels, drive belt, bag, handles, etc. : ) after all that time, Honda was first on my list when shopping for a replacement.
I looked seriously at electric ones but did not fell comfortable being tied in to a single system for fuel - batteries are expensive, anyone telling you that those are more economical are leaving out that part of the equation.
So, looking at Hondas, I considered several models, the HRX217VKA was my first choice, but after reading enough positive reviews on MowersDirect.com and the lawnmowerforum.com sites, i decided to pull the plug and get the HRX217HYA - the "Cadillac" top of the line model. And, I'm certainly glad I did.
First of all, the online buying experience couldn't have been easier. Shipped in just a single day (!), and from opening the box to first pull was under 5 minutes - no tools needed, just snap the handle into place, put the bag on, add oil and gas. Of course it started on the first pull!
I have a combination of zoysia (think 3-inch steel wool) and bluegrass. The Versamow feature really shined here - the zoysia HAS to be bagged, so I had that on one notch up from "full bag". The bluegrass can handle some mulching so I had it on 50/50. Does this thing every produce finely shredded clippings! Between the finer clippings (being more condensely packed into the bag), and the larger bag, I was able to do my 1/4 acre lot in just 2 "emptyings" of the bag instead of the normal 4 or 5. And the blade-brake/Rotostop system worked great, no need to turn it off while emptying the bag.
Many thanks to Robert Coats ("Robert@Honda") on the Lawnmowerforums.com site for his helpful technical expertise and tips. I'll be sure to take first-class care of this excellent mower, to enjoy it for many years to come!
- Smooth, quiet operation
- Blade brake / "Rotostop"
- Nice lines left on the lawn (even given that it is heavier than my old mower)
- Uses about twice the gas as my old GCV160 (but for a mower in this price range, not really an issue)
- Smaller people may have a bit of a time maneuvering this - I'm 6 feet tall / 240 and can mandhandle it. It is a bit longer, handle-wise, and heavier, but not so much as to wear you out.
In all, I really like it - and am glad I opted up a model or two.

I have had my previous HRX for over 6 years and it worked flawlessly up until this last season where the belt needed to be changed due to age. My previous HRX was a workhorse not only making my lawn look great it was great on leafs during the autumn .
My 13 year old will start cutting the lawn and I wanted the auto stop feature for his safety and eliminate the belt totally. I purchased the HRX217HYA with the Hydrostatic Transmission With Cruise Control and Honda Roto-Stop® Blade Brake Clutch which gives me that extra sense of safety.
What a difference in the transmission and the speed control over the older models. Bottom Line: Get the Hydrostatic Transmission as it eliminates the belt altogether "And" get the Roto Stop Blade Brake so you don't have to turn off the mower to empty a bag. Start once and it stays on until you are finished.
The only other model above this one is the same machine with electric start. Unless you can't pull the One Pull Start Honda Engine, then go with the electric start.
Great Mower and super smooth transmission. Thanks.

Our now one month old Honda mower does a superb job mulching, far better than our Toro Self-pace mower has. But, it is a handful to maneuver compared to the Toro. The self-pace feature makes mower use incredibly simply. The Honda, being hydrostatically driven seems perfect for adapting to some kind of variable drive based on user forward pressure rather than the clunky separate control. This criticism aside, it appears to be an excellent product.
Engineering Screw UpModel Reviewed: HRX217HYA Tuesday, June 7, 2016
Reading, PA Type of use: Residential
I just replaced a 10 year old Toro Super Recycler model 20039 for a Honda HRX217HYA. When I purchased the Toro back in 2006 it was Toro's top model, and CR ranked it just below the top Honda model of the day. The Toro was more expensive than the Honda, but I was interested in Toro's Personal Pace drive system. Honda was rated (1) point higher on evenness of cutting, but I made the trade for the Toro transmission. I was not disappointed and have been very please with the Toro's grass cutting performance. That said, however, I was really annoyed with toro's quality. Every safety feature had broken by the time I dumped it for the new HRX. Every year I replaced at least (1) wheel. That's a lot of wheels!! I rebuilt the transmission (2) times, and on several occasions had to replace the wheel assembly mounting bolts because the snapped off at the collar.
So this time around Honda is again just a point or two ahead of Toro, but I was not making the same mistake twice. I loved Toro's Personal Pace, but too late Toro. I had a hard time deciding on which transmission to select in the Honda series offerings, but settled on the HYA. No regrets there. It does cut and mulch a little better than Toro so that's a plus. I find it very maneuverable and easy to use. The multi-speed transmission seems to always have the right gearing for my needs. Nice work Honda!!
All this said, however, I have one huge complaint. Why, oh why, oh why did Honda engineers settle on a handle design that incorporates a forward-facing hook design? And why didn't I see this glaring design failure before purchasing this mower? This handle catches on every low branch, shrub, or whatever else gets in its way, and in the process pulling the mower out of your hands, disengaging the drive and blade, and requiring a total reset on the mowing groove. Clearly this is a function of function following form. It's a disappointment.

I have enjoyed my mower so far. It is very easy to start. I use the folding handle all the time. I am please with how the grass is cut very fine and more grass will fit into catch bag. Bag is easy to remove and emtey. Speed control is easy to use.
If I had one complaint it would be the cutting height adjustment. Having to adjust each wheel seperatly is a pain and the most difficult off all the feature to operate.

This is a piece of equipment you must have if you like to see your grass cut professionally, fast with no stress and in a timely fashion. The instructions to assemble the mower is easy to read and follow when putting together it is very light compared to my Sears Craftsman that I put to rest!!! The mower is well put together and to start the mower is 1 to 2 pulls with the automatic priming technology. It will give you a good cardio work out with the fast speeds. The price is high $$$$$ for the purchase and a nice Honda cover should come with it as a BONUS!!!!!. I will recommend this mower.

I’m a homeowner but I work with a lot of industrial equipment, as well as being an engineer, so I can tell the difference between Junk and Quality. This mower is definitely a quality mower, the big question you have to ask yourself is…Is this mower worth 2 or 3 times the price of a cheap box store mower or 20% to 30% more than some of its competition? Here’s what I can say to help you choose, all of the tests were done at the #3 height setting: 1) The design is traditional: fixed wheels, read drive, individual height adjusters so it works and operates just like you granddads mower. 2) The hydro-drive is flawless, smooth and even with a nice lead in, if you engage it slow, plus you can shift on the fly. 3) It’s bagging capabilities are unbelievable, it fills the bag full and tight like a bale of hay. 4) Mulches very well; I tested this on very tall grass, 8 to 10 inches. At normal pace it will leave a trail of clippings but very even. If you slow it down to half speed it works quite well. Under normal conditions you can’t even see a cut blade, one of the best I’ve seen. 5) All of the other functions; like blade engage, starting and constructions are all good but let’s face it any quality mower today will do all that. 6) It’s a bit hard to back up because the hyro-drive adds resistance, this is especial problematic on hills. Lastly something not in the brochure, The Honda is American made, only the parent company is Japanese. All the Cub walk-behinds are made in Mexico with a Chinese motor. Toro’s are a mixed bag, some US some all over, same with Husq’y, MTD and the Briggs lines. In closing weigh your options; do you have a postage stamp of a lawn that you mow once a month or, like me, a tricky, hilly, thick lawn that will choke most mowers. Hope this helps.

Back in 1989 I purchased my first Honda mower. It was a 21" rear bagger (I believe an HR?214 Series?) which was back in the time where mulching had yet to take off and our Midwestern cities would actually pick up our yard clippings each week.
A couple years later, in the early 90's Honda offered a "mulching kit" which consisted of another blade with a spacer to attach both blades at once. It did the job, but never as well as today's mowers do as it was under-powered for mulching (only 4hp) and never designed to be a mulcher in the first place. That mower finally ended its life in 2009. It was a workhorse but I wanted to try something different...I bought a Toro Super-Recycler.
Today I decided to give the Super Recycler to a family member and go back to Honda. The Toro did the job, but it never quite lived up to the hype and quite frankly, I didn't care much for the personal pace.
I brought it home from a Honda Power Center and gave it a workout. It took me about 5 minutes to fall back into the Honda Controls as my motor memory came back to them. I still find them more comfortable than the Toro could be, and am back enjoying a true self propelled mower once again. The hydro-static drive is very nice and is easy to adjust.
The Honda definitely gave a better cut than the Toro and yes the Toro had only 4 cuts on the blade so far this year. The mulching ability of the Honda surpassed that of the Toro by far. No excess cut grass trailing along the wheel tracks and I knew then for certain, Honda had me back.
This is a quality mower and I look forward to another 20 years with Honda.

I had an old lawn boy mower for over 15 years of service. Coil failed and had to wait for parts so I decided to upgrade. Looking at the Honda mowers I was concerned about the weight of the mower and the rear discharge. The old mower had offset front wheels for edging and was significantly lighter in weight being a two-cycle mower.
Using the Honda mower is true pleasure. Variable speed hydrostatic drive is a phenomenal drive choice. Goes up hills easily, across hills, and across flat land with great poise. Leaves an amazing cut. If the lawn is high I use the bag and set the clip director to partially bag and mulch. Can mow an enormous area (1/4 acre) with no clumps and only need to empty the bad about two times. Cuts beautifully even if the lawn is wet.
A great mower with great features and easy to use. I did give four stars for ease of use as I would like to have a larger fuel tank. Sometimes I need to stop and fill up after about an hour of use if the grass is high. Has been in service for 4 years as of the writing of this review.

Bought this mower used (1yr old) on Craigslist. The previous owner gave mys original receipt so that the warranty will transfer to me. Anyway, after 3 or 4 uses, I think I'm finally getting the hang of the rear drive system. My old mower (a 16yr old Craftsman) was front wheel drive so you didn't have to stop the drive system when you turned for the next row. My back yard slopes and it can pull itself up the hill with no problem (yes I have a hill in FL). The old mower would either spin it's wheels or stop all together.
The cut is much better, the mulching is excellent, and it is extremely easy to start.
There are 2 things that prevent me from giving 5 stars all the way across the board. The first is the power lever tends to get knocked back to idle when cutting near low branches. The other thing is that the fuel capacity is relatively low.

I purchased this mower to replace a 15 year old self propelled walk behind. This review is based on my unboxing and first use.
The mower was/is fully assembled in the box. Simply remove from the box and fold the operating handle to your preferred height (3 settings available). Since I'm tall at 6'4", the highest handle height was most comfortable to me. Adjusting the handle height requires no tools and is extremely simple to do.
Before first use, users add the provided engine oil to the crankcase; and then remove all extra packaging from the mower. Slide the grass bag onto the bag frame (if you're using it) and install if desired.
I added fresh fuel, adjusted mower height. The mower started on the first pull - that impressed me (I expected 5-10 pulls on the starter handle since it had never had fuel before).
This model only spins the cutting blade when that lever is engaged. So the engine can be running, without the blade spinning. This allows me to move the mower around the yard under power, without having to worry about cutting things I don't want cut.
When mowing, I typically overlap the previous row by about 6-8 inches. This method proved to be effective for a consistent cut across multiple rows. I didn't feel like I was over or under utilizing the mower cutting width. Propel speeds are highly adjustable and I could easily speed up or slow down as needed.
Cleanup was a breeze. Since my lawn was very dry, I simply used my air compressor to blow out any clippings in crevices or under the mowing deck.
After I use the mower for a season, I'll write a more in depth review of my experience.

My experience with this mower has not been good. It performed pretty well for awhile. I did find the regulation of exact speed using the transmission bar a little awkward, as I have to do a lot of speed adjustment due to a yard full of obstacles and turns; but other than that it seemed to run well.
However, after the first run in spring of this year, the mower refused to crank. I did get it to eventually crank, but there was a lot of smoke out of the exhaust, and the engine would die after a minute or two or running. Later I discovered gasoline leaking from the air filter, and after several attempts, it will not run for more than a minute or two without stalling, assuming it will crank at all. I cannot store it in my basement anymore because of the fumes of gasoline leaking out.
I don't know anything about carburetors or disassembling engines, and I don't have any means of transporting this machine to a shop to be looked at. So at this point, I've got a 150 pound doorstop, and I'm not really sure what to do other than just try to sell it for parts and take my losses.
I took good care of this mower, followed all the maintenance instructions in the manual to the letter, and used good quality fresh gasoline with stabilizer added, so there is apparently some kind of internal defect in the fuel system from the manufacturer.
I’m really disappointed. I wanted a good quality mower that would last for a long time, and I had always heard Honda was tops in quality for lawn mowers. And to be fair, I have seen a lot of good reviews for this mower elsewhere, so I may have just gotten a lemon—but not very pleasant when you’ve just shelled out almost $800 for a lawn mower. So I don’t think I will be buying another Honda.

So far pretty good on the new one, and I love how easily it started up, and the smoothness of the clutch.
On the downside, the parts seem far inferior to my old Honda mower. The new one came with a broken plastic clip for adjusting the handle height. Time will tell about the overall quality of this mower, but out of the gate it seems pretty average considering this is one Honda's high end walk behind mowers.

Just purchased from The Home Depot, and have used it on my half acre twice. It replaced a 10 year old Snapper Hi-Vac with the Kawasaki FJ motor. I had nothing but trouble with that mower pretty much from day 1. I kept having to go back to my 15 year old HRR Honda as a backup, and even after sitting around, it would fire up within 2 pulls and run like a top. On crap gas. Honda quality is evident, so I'm converted for good.
Easiest starting mower I've ever used
Hydrostatic clutch is super smooth
Non metal deck is genius
Variable mulching is even cooler than I thought it would be
Bag removal/dumping is really easy
Not sure if it's the wheel base or just the front wheels being a little farther from the blade than I'm used to, but it doesn't quite hit the tight spaces like my other mowers.
Wish the fuel tank was a bit larger. Had to refill prior to finishing, but I do have a large yard, and I was using the blade brake to keep it running while dumping the bag.
Pricey, but probably worth it.
I don't find this mower to be heavier than any other mower with like features. Also, if you hold the handles on the sides, there is no downward pressure on the handle, and it won't pop wheelies like some have suggested.
Also, I bought the bullet and purchased a new gas can, and filled up with the corn free, real, high octane gas from my local outdoor equipment supplier. That with the Castrol synthetic recommended for my BMW, this thing will probably last forever.

I bought the original version of this lawn mower about 12 years ago. I broke down to buy the latest version.
I enjoy the versacut instead of the adapters on the previous version. I like the extra power; the original had 130cc's, this one has 190cc's. The new mower starts at once without setting a choke as on the old version. I like the latest mower's maximum 4" height. The older one's maximum was only 3". The lower blade has a better cutting configuration than my original. The plastic housing on both is easy to clean and will never rust. I enjoy cutting at the speed I need. Combined, these latest features makes my weekly mowing so much easier. I've never had such a mower so easy to start with the power to cut and mulch without ever stopping. Maintenance is also easy. All together, my lawn is beautiful.
I highly recommend this mower for the average homeowner. The quality and features are definitely worth the price.

I am a long time (25 years) Snapper mower owner. After my most recent Snapper died after 4 years, I had it with Snapper's declining quality. In the last 10 years, I've had 3 Snappers that died.
My neighbor has an old Honda mower going on 15 year that he loves and mentioned how it was trouble free. After reading the reviews, I took the plunge and purchased the HRX217HYA.
Some things I love about it:
1) True one pull starting
2) The blade clutch is awesome. You can leave the motor running but disengage the blade, which is incredibly helpful if you have to briefly stop to pick up an obstruction or clear something from your path. My old Snapper had to be stopped and restarted every time.
3) The composite deck should not rust through, a problem I had with 1 Snapper that rotted through after 5 years.
4) The mulching is amazing. The blades really do chop the grass into a fine mulch that falls into the turf. My old Snapper would clog and leave big wet chunks of grass all over the lawn.
5) Produces the most even and beautiful cut of any mower I've owned. My Snapper's drove me crazy with having to make multiple passes over the same area because the either did not cut everything or did not cut evenly. The Honda does it all in one pass.
Some things I'm not so crazy about:
1) In comparison to my old Snapper, the Honda is definitely a heavier mower to push. The self-drive helps a great deal, but the heavier weight is clearly felt when trying to maneuver in tight areas.
2) Not a great vac-mower. My Snapper was pretty good in picking up leaves, small twigs and other debris on the lawn. The Honda does not have the same vacuum power. It picks up grass just fine, but leaves and other heavier materials tend to get ejected out the side. During this Spring's Maple tree spinners drop, the Honda could not pick up the Maple tree spinners. It just left them. My Snapper would suck those up.
3) The settings for the self-propelled drive could use a bit of a tweaking. They start at extremely slow, but in the space of one setting go from a very slow to a brisk walk. It's almost like it's missing a notch or 2. I've left it at the brisk pace because the speed one tick down is just too slow.
4) The gas tank could be a little bigger. For my home, I could mow 2-3 times before needing to fill the tank again. The Honda needs a fill-up some time half way through the second mowing. If you have a very large property, the need to refill can be a headache. Fortunately, my front and back yards are not very large so the Honda does just fine for a mowing session.

Engine surging can't be fixedModel Reviewed: HRX217HYA Saturday, June 13, 2015
Lutherville, MD Type of use: Residential
I've had the HRX217K3HYA for less than two years and the engine has an annoying surging when the blade is not engaged. Honda will not cover this defect in the engine - they blame it on ethanol in the gasoline. (Recall that ethanol has been in gas for at least 20 years)
The surging actually started after only 5 hours of usage, but this second year I decided to take it to an authorized service center, since there's supposed to be a five year warranty on the mower. But after 10 days, the service dept. said that bad gas caused the problem and is not covered by warranty. They cleaned the carb but that did not help, and they said I need a new carb, which they had not yet ordered.
I called Honda in Georgia, and they said they will call the service dept. to provide assistance. But instead I just decided to pick up the mower, and I ordered and installed a new carb myself. The surging stopped for about 5 minutes, then started again.
And then I got a nasty letter in the mail from Honda, stating that bad gas is to blame for all the problems, and of course it's never covered by warranty.
Note that when the cutting blade is engaged the engine runs fine - it has lots of power. But when disengaged the engine revs and then almost stalls, about once each second, regardless of the throttle setting.
I suspect the problem is not with the carb but rather in the governor and the linkage to the throttle. With the blade disengaged and at full throttle, I'm able to grab the linkage and stabilize the engine speed - and it will not surge if I carefully let go of the linkage. It seems the linkage needs a damper to smooth out the spring in the linkage.

This is an vastly improved version of the Honda mower I have been using with great satisfaction for over 15 years.
The blade stop, which I would not be without, hasn't changed - a major reason I bought this mower. With your left palm you push a button down and a control bar forward to engage the blade. As long as the bar, which lays against the main handle, is held down by either hand as you mow it stays latched. There are 9 detents on the drive control, which is very smooth and easy to accurately change on the fly as the grass density varies. I have not tried either extreme but it will definitely go very fast or slow. You can bag or mulch all the grass or vary the portions of each, and it is amazing how well it mulches, even in tall heavy grass, without leaving any clumps.
After you unpack, the only assembly is mounting the grass bag on its frame. Lift and lock the main control bar in the desired position, pour in the provided oil, fill it with gas, and start it. Mine started on the second pull, but if I had allowed a little time for gas to flow into the carburetor I am sure it would have started on the first. I would rather not have the starter rope on the control handle, but if it will start easily in more adverse temperatures it will be okay.
There is very minimal packing to remove. The oil, manual and grass bag frame were well hidden underneath the mower and out of sight.
This is a fine machine!

I called my local Honda dealer and took it in for normal plug, carb maint as well as blade sharpening. was not required but I figured that since I paid $$$ for this machine that I should not treat it like my old one. They did the full maint and gave me back a report that showed timing points, etc. this is the 3rd season for this mower and everything matches nearly identical internally as when I bought it. impressive. I figure that I will do this optional maint every other year ($99). After maint, mower starts on 1st pull every time, just like last year and the year before that.
I purchased this mower at my local Honda dealer while my neighbor bought his at big box store. Same model, but we paid the same. not sure if there are any differences or not but he is happy with his too.
I have a hill in my front yard. when deciding what mower I would buy, I reviewed this one and the Husquvarna 4WD. The Husq one showed some owner complaints, the Honda one did not and eventually I went with the Honda. GLAD I DID.
If Honda puts out a 4WD option, I will upgrade - otherwise I am now a Honda mower owner for life.

Purchased my third Honda lawn mower and it performed just great, as expected. Picked up nearly all of those annoying maple tree seed propellers that cover my yards very Spring. The other two Honda lawn mowers I owned still worked fine, I just wanted to keep up with the latest available options and my dealer offered a fair trade-in for 12 year old Honda lawn mowers. The hydrostatic self propelled transmission is what sold me when I tested this HRX217 model at the dealer. Honda also provided an extra year on warranty for a total of 6 years. Although, it was years 7 to 12 before I had any problems with the other 2 Honda mowers I have owned. Both had minor problems with transmission drives. Engines still ran great and always started on the first gentle pull. Will most difinately buy another Honda lawn mower, in about 12 years!!!!

I am a diehard 2-stroke lover. But, my 1996 Gold Series , aluminum deck LawnBoy has been spending too much time in the shop now and the grass was getting long so I bought this Honda. I chose the HYA for the larger engine, composite deck and hydrostatic transmission. I was worried about its 96 pounds. This thing is HEAVY. First thing, filling this with gas is difficult to do without making a mess because the filler hole is too small. I discovered later that the tank is also too small, unable to complete my yard on one fill ( I have a 1/2 acre lot including house, driveway, deck, trees and other landscaping. Filling this mower while hot seems like a safety hazard to me. My grass was 6-7" tall and damp on the lower half when I cut it. The Honda mulched it well as long as I kept the speed down to 50% on the 9-way settings. If you have long, uninterrupted runs before you have to turn this beast, it will work well. My forearms were pumped up from manhandling this thing around my yard. I'm sure this Honda is state-of-the-art in today's pollution-free 4-stroke world but I miss my lightweight and powerful 2-stroke.

I purchased my HRX217hya in Feb. from Home Depot in Olathe Kansas. This model was on clearance and was discounted 50%. What a great deal, I had been researching Hondas for the last year and wanted to buy one. I bought the mower and waited for the grass to grow. It worked great 4 times, then on the 5th use the motor died like it ran out of gas, and would not restart. The compression was going back out the muffler. I took it back to home depot and they offered to give back my money, or fix it. The only catch is to buy back the same exact mower would now cost me additional money about 300 bucks. Thus eliminating my good deal. I opted to have it repaired, I called today and was told they could not fix the mower and they shipped it to Arizona. I guess I should have bought a goat, that is what I need now to grub down my lawn. I am looking at 4-7 weeks without my mower. It will cost me 30 bucks a week to have it mowed.

Replaced a circa 1997 HRM215 self propelled with plastic deck. Honda engine still going strong. Self propelled drive train finally gave out. At $368 for a new drive unit it was time for an upgrade. Will fix it some other time and sell it as the motor is running great.
1) Quality is excellent. I was a little nervous about the auto choke as I saw bad reviews on it. No issues to date when cold start or hot-restart
2) 2015 Motor has all the great features of my 1997 and runs great. Quiet, strong, dependable. Honda all the way.
3) I spent the extra money for the hydrostatic drive and blade brake system. Love both so far no issues.
4) I have used it for 3 cuttings so far and approximately 10 hrs. No issues. Levers for engaging blade and self propelled took a little to get used to as for 18 years with the old mower it was 2nd nature. By the third cutting I am adjusted. Very efficient and practical.
5) I have seen other reviews complaining about the plastic deck. My 1997 has a 10yr warranty on the deck and has lasted 18yrs with no issues. The new decks have a lifetime warranty, so I don't see what all the fuss is about. Under normal use I would expect the deck to outlast the engine and drive train.
6) Other reviewers complained that the when engaging the blade clutch the engine would stall. Common sense, engage the blade on previously cut area or on drive/sidewalk. Obviously you can expect to engage the blade from rest in tall uncut grass. I had no issues what so ever with blade engagement
In summary, if I get approximately 20yrs out of this one, other than normal wear and tear maintenance, it will be another great Honda purchase.

My Background with Honda: Had an HRM215SDA 2-spd Xenoy Decked mower for 14 years. Transmission failed at about 8-10 years, converted it to push mower. Deck failed at 14 years, both front wheels completely broke off. 135cc Engine still strong. Overall good experience although tranny reduced it from excellent.
Just purchased HRX217HYA with NEXITE deck. Hope deck lasts at least as long and tranmission longer. This is hydrostaic tranny so I think it will. Nice to have self-propel feature back. 190cc engine definitely stronger. However, at least at a first impression the blades do not look as sturdy (thinner). Hope clip director feature durable, but definitely easier than a separate mulching plug. Bag appears to be same size and fit as my old one, so now I have 2. I would not want bag any smaller.
Used it one time so far, as a mulcher with excellent results. Blade-brake handle took a little time to get used to as prev mower did not have this feature. LIKE throttle-like (lever) speed control ALOT, avoiding the new throttle paddle controversy. I'm not sure if this mower jumps around a little more than my old one. At first I thought the HRX was lighter, but it is not. I think maybe because of the 9" wheels it sits a little higher, or that I am mowing a little faster. In any case, if so it is marginally different and produced excellent results anyway.
Time will tell. Hopefully I will be able to update this.

Response from Honda
We’re sorry to hear you are having trouble with the cut quality of your mower. We have a handout that can help solve many issues: http://cdn.powerequipment.honda.com/pe/pdf/lawn-mower/mowing-a-great-looking-lawn.pdf
Mulching can create challenges with cut quality sometimes, mainly because the way the air flows and pulls up on the grass. Bagging creates more of a vacuum, which pulls the grass up more. That doesn't mean you can't get a good cut quality while mulching, but you may need to adjust how you mow a little bit. Mowing more frequently, overlapping a little more, and reducing your speed usually takes care of cut quality issues. The mowing pattern mentioned on the bottom of page 2 should also help.
We also suggest experimenting a little with the Versamow system, if you haven't already. Moving the Clip Director one or two notches from full mulch can help tremendously with these issues - again, it's creating more of a vacuum and pulling the grass up. You'll end up bagging a little bit, but it won't be a lot of clippings, and the majority of the grass will still be mulched.
Everyone's grass is a little different, so it may require a little experimentation to find which of these solutions works best for your lawn. But most consumers find that these solve their problems with cut quality. Hope this is helpful!

The lot that I cut is 15000 square feet before all the improvements
were built. I leave the grass on the long side, setting #3 and I
always mulch unless the grass is to long then I use the bagger. This
review will serve two purposes first to review this mower hereinafter
referred to as the SP and second to review my first Honda mower a
Harmony 216 hereinafter referred to as the 216. I bought the 216 in
2000. I love that mower so much that when my wife wanted me to get a
rider I compromised with her and bought the SP. The 216 is light
weight and simple to use. It has always started after sitting in the
garage all winter and I don't use any gas additive. I may have to try
6-8 time to get it going but it has never fail to start. Same for the
SP. After the first start of the spring each will usually start on
the first pull. I still use the 216 for trimming around the fence and
landscape, etc. I do have then services every other year at the Honda
dealer. First let me say that I have never had any of the problems
that some of the other reviews relate to; not starting when hot,
getting so clogged with grass that the motor stops, leaving large
clumps of clippings and pinched fingers. The grass does not stick to
the underside of the deck, so no clumps or getting chocked up. The
way I avoid the pinched fingers is I use to hands to engage the
blade. I am right handed so I press the button on the blade bar with
my left thumb and push the bar forward when the blades are engaged I
use my right hand to push the bar up to the push handle and slips my
left hand down on the left side of the push handle. I then push the
clutch bar forward with my right hand. No injuries to either hand.

This model is the closest in features to my 1985 HR215KSXA. My 30 year old mower still works, but after reviewing the features in the 2015's, I figure it's time to invest in a new model and give this one away. The Clip Director is a nice feature and no extra side discharge or mulching pieces. I wanted two features that I have on the 1985 model: static propel speed (Cruise Control) and separate blade control (Roto Stop). My deck is still fine. One wheel is almost worn out and the throttle cabling needs an adjustment. Rather than put time and money into a tune up, I decided a new mower before the summer season would be nice. I live in South Florida, mow the lawn year-round, and the St. Augustine grass down here is much tougher than the grass I mowed growing up in Indiana. The ball bearing wheels and adjustable handle will be nice features as well. The blade clip technology looks like an improvement, although I have the twin blade system on the 1985. Honda makes a quality product that really does last. My current mower has probably cut my lawn over 1200 times in the last thirty years - (40 times a year x 30 years). I've changed the plug and the blades and the air filter, but these are all regular maintenance items. I did have one issue with the recoil mechanism once, but I was able to fix it myself. Not bad for thirty years of service.
Honda should make a testimonial page based on the number of years of service. If you do, put mine in the 30 + area.

This new Honda mower is perfect. It is lighter than the old one. The pull start is a snap and easy to use. The wheels can be set a little higher than the 1992 model. The handle has three height adjustments. I like the idea of the Clip Director Knob. It will definitely come in handy this Fall when cleaning up leaves. My old leaf vac bit the dust. Honda provided a bottle of oil with the mower. Oiled and gassed up I took it out for a mow. It cut well, was quiet (ear protectors on) and performed flawlessly.

I WAS ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT THE STEEL DECK RUSTING THROUGH, SO I RETURNED IT AND ORDERED THE HRX217HYA ONLINE. IT WAS HARD TO SPEND THE EXTRA $200, BUT I HAVE NO REGRETS NOW. THIS MOWER HAS TURNED OUT TO BE THE BEST MOWER MONEY CAN BUY.
IT ARIVED IN 2 BUSINESS DAY. IT WAS IN THE U P S TRUCK STANDING UPRIGHT INSTEAD OF FLAT, CAUSING OIL TO LEAK THROUGH THE AIR FILTER. I CLEANED IT UP , REPLACED THE AIR FILTER, ADDED GAS AND THE BOTTLE OF OIL PROVIDED. IT STARTED ON THE 2ND PULL. IT HAD THE SAME KNOCK @ IDLE AS THE HRR216. I TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL HONDA SERVICE DEPT. TO GET THIER OPINION. I WAS INFORMED "THEY ALL MAKE THAT SOUND".
I HAVE USED IT 12 TIMES MOWING (BAG & MULCH) & COLLECTING LEAVES BEFORE THE SEASON CAME TO AN END. IT DID A SUPERB JOB AT EACH OF THESE TASKS, BETTER THAN ANY PREVIOUS MOWER I HAVE OWNED, INCUDING TORO & JOHN DEERE. THE VERSAMOW SYSTEM CAN'T BE BEAT FOR ITS SIMPLICITY & ITS EFFECTIVNESS.
I DID ENCOUNTER 2 PROBLEMS THOUGH. 1) THE GRASS BAG OPENING IS LARGER THAN A 30 GALLON PAPER YARD WASTE BAG, MAKING A SIMPLE TASK DIFFICULT. 2) A LOT OF DUST PASSED THROUGH THE GRASS BAG & INTO MY FACE. I MAY PURCHASE THE "LOW DUST GRAS BAG" TO CORRECT THIS.
I FOUND THE MOWER TO BE NO HEAVIER THAN MY 32 YEAR OLD HONDA WITH A CAST DECK, BUT IT WAS HEAVIER THAN THE HRR216 WITH ITS STEEL DECK.
I LIKED HAVING THE CHOICE OF SPOPPING THE BLADES WITH THE MOTOR STILL RUNNING. I LOVE THE HYDROSTATIC CRUISE CONTROL. IT HAS TO BE THE MOST RELIABLE SELF PROPELLED SYSTEM AVAILABLE. I HAD NO PROBLEM WITH THE HAND CONTROLS AS MY OLD HONDA HAD THE SAME SETUP.
THE AUTO. CHOKE FEATURE IS A REAL CONVENIANCE, AS IS THE 3 POSSITION ADJUSTABLE HANDLE. THIS IS THE 1ST MOWER I HAVE EVER USED COMFORTABLY (6'4").THE TWIN BLADES DO A GREAT JOB CUTTING THE GRASS INTO SMALL PIECES FOR BETTER MULCHING & PACKING MORE CLIPPINGS INTO THE GRASS BAG. I WAS SUPRISED HOW MUCH MORE THE 9 ' WHEELS SMOOTHED OUT MY NOT SO SMOOTH LAWN OVER THE MORE COMMON 8" WHEELS.
I MIX FUEL STABILIZER IN MY GAS CAN AND I ALWAYS EMPTY THE CARB WITH THE FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE AFTER EACH USE. I ALSO CHANGED TO FULL SYNTHETIC OIL AFTER THE FIRST 5 HOURS OF USE, AS STATED IN THE OWNERS MANUAL.
ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, I WOULD NOT HESITATE RECOMENDING THIS MOWER TO ANYBODY WHO WANTS TO OWN THE BEST MOWER AVAILABLE.

Recently my mower blade bogged down or something of that nature. I wasn't able to diagnose the issue before my rpms shot through the roof and couldn't shut the mower in time so it threw a rod.
After a cost analysis I've decided to repair the motor myself. After a cost analysis I've decided to repair the mower myself. After tearing down the machine and ordering parts I've noticed some things. The main difference between commercial and residential is the cast iron sleeve the piston goes in. Cast iron sleeves will improve longevity of the machine, but these (residential) machines supposedly lasts 15yrs or so I'm not sure it's really worth $1200 for an underpowered cast iron sleeved mower.
Commercial grade machines from Honda are 160cc. Owning a ~190cc mower I can't imagine a smaller less torque ratted mower regardless how the sleeve is made especially the price it commands. I do like the easy pull start the Honda has as I've had those difficult to start motors that will wear blisters trying to get it started. That said, it's a feature I can live without...I speak for myself.
The plastic deck is ridiculous. Supposedly it's lifetime warranty, but good luck talking to anyone about replacing it as I have cracks, dings, dents...ect exactly what is advertised it doesn't do and am always given the run around when I brought it up. I'm sure plastic is lighter than the steel version, but that's not a selling point for me at all. Little JB weld has fixed my crack deck issue (that stuff is great btw).
Because the rod broke and put a nic in the crankshaft I've decided it'd be wise to replace it with another. I had to go through 3 suppliers as the first shipped me one that had a plastic gear that the timing belt attached to. The part in my motor is a metal material. Supplier 1 & 2 ship parts directly from Honda so supplier #2 couldn't guarantee a direct replacement. Supplier #3 was $10-20 more but had the exact part on hand (luckily). #3 and I went round and round about the part being obsolete and is being replaced with a crank that has a plastic gear. Even after I assured him that's what Honda and Supplier #1 said. Honda's reasoning was that it was a "Marketing" decision. If it were an engineering decision that'd be one thing...I don't like that answer. I'm not sure it makes a difference as the cam is similar/same plastic material...but wasn't a direct replacement for me and makes me think Honda is cheapening their components which will effect the motors life expectancy.
Overall the Honda is decent, but take a look at the Snapper [...] and compare price, motor size, torque, cast iron sleeve. That will probably be my next mower.

I don't like the plastic deck - the grass builds up very fast on the plastic deck (steel is so much better). Never had this big build up grass problem with my Snapper.
Second: the bag is designed all wrong. The opening is way too big. The grass falls out when you take it off to empty it. The bag should have a smaller intake opening and a way to open the end of the bag to dump out the grass clipping.
Over thirty years I have owned two top of the line Snapper lawnmowers and I'm really sorry I purchased a Honda, in March 2014.
Buyer beware. Don't believe the great reviews on this unit. If I could return it I would in a minute.

If I buy a product and it does what I expected and paid for it to do than it is a 3. Add or subtract to that accordingly.
This is a heavy mower, not a trim mower. I live on the VA/NC border. We have KY31 grass which is a coarser blue grass, almost an orchard grass. I cut about 3/4 acre w/some slope. I bought it last fall. I bagged and mulched. It handled tall grass (2 weeks w/o cutting due to rain). The bag held more than I expected and is easy to remove, dump & reinstall. I bagged leaves as a test. It did well but that is not what this mower was designed for.
It cuts and mulches better than any mower I have used including a 42"Z turn Toro, a 22' Troy Built (push) and a 21" Lawn Boy self propelled. The Lawn Boy (not the models Toro makes) was good but the motor would strain in high grass if you had it in self propelled. This mower did not. It starts on the 1st pull.
The drive is on the front which is best for making turns. But it also limits blade access to grass under a shrub since the blade is set further back in the deck. All it really means is an extra minute of weed eating.
I would like to see drive clutch lever moved from under the handle to over the handle bar. It would be a cleaner design.
I like this mower. I recommend it and I would buy it again

We just purchased this mower. Love it! I took it out of the shipping box, adjusted the handle, added oil and gas and it started right up. My lawn looks great.
Thanks Honda! Great mower!

i bought an expensive honda because i thought that they were reliable. It is very hard to start. Have to spray ether in order to get it to start. I have to start the mower every month in the winter or it wont start in the spring. I have taken it to the dealer and they said that these mowers were just hard to start. After it starts, it runs just fine. Also the carb plugs up easily and has to be taken apart quite regularly.
Would i buy another one? NO NO NO

I've owned an HRX217HYA for three years. It was expensive and worth it. Cutting grass will never be fun but this machine makes it so easy there's not much to complain about. You just fire it up, set the cruise control and follow the mower all around your yard. The "one pull" starting is real too, compared to some of my previous mowers that required ether being sprayed directly into the spark plug hole for cold starts.
Here are a few suggestions to make your day even more pleasant with this machine. First, do an oil change using FULL synthetic oil, really good for your motor. Second, when you get fresh gas for the season, mix in the recommended amount of "ethanol treatment" fluid because the alcohol in today's fuel is a problem for a carburetor equipped engine. And third, shut off the gas line and run the carb dry after every use.

Had for two weeks and the second time I used it I noticed that the smaller of the two clutch return springs had fallen off. i know it was installed when mower first used but cannot locate it anywhere in my lawn??
Thinking that maybe the blades threw it somewhere. Am trying to identify part number to order a replacement. Other than this I am satisfied with mower.

Don't let the title mislead you. Just wanted to get the Honda Power Equipment Engineers attention regarding the grass catcher.
Hate: I only bag my grass clippings, this is the reason for 3 star Features. Ok, you wanted to provide a large grass bag catcher; why make the mouth lager than a standard 30 gallon paper recycle bag? You made my life much harder and increased effort with this design, as one can not fit the grass catcher into the paper recycle bag, one must hold the catcher above and shake the grass into the paper bag. ARRRRRG.
Love: Mower quality very high and long reliable service is expected. The Self-propelled, hydrostatic Cruise Control is awesome and powerful. I had the other brand personal-pace mower for two years and wear-n-tear on my knee force me to sell it. The Self-propelled difference, the Honda drive pulls without any operator effort, as the personal-pace mower requires operator pushing effort, when turning the mower my inside knee took a beating.
The two control bar (Clutch and Blade Stop) management seems a little difficult at first, but if you use your left hand to hold the Blade Stop bar and your right hand to manage the clutch engagement then no problem is experienced when approaching obstacles. (see manual for illustration) The granularity of mower drive speed is a nice feature, settings are stable and accurate. After my research, this Honda HRX217 model has the best operator drive control mechanism compared to any another brand or make currently marketed for residential use.
Overall I am a pleased owner and would purchased this Honda model again.

I just picked up this mower at my local Home Depot, and I could not be more excited! For the past 13 years, I have owned an HRB216HXA. It has given me great service over this time period, however, It was time to replace it due to irritating problems. So, I sold it for $75.00 and picked up this model. All of the features and controls are identical except for the "Clip Director". My old one had a mulching plug. Since I was already familiar with the operation of this mower, I was quickly mowing in style. It started on the first pull right out of the box. All of the mechanical features speak for themselves, however, the one feature that excites me the most is the "Quadra Cut System" The cut with this machine is like no other; it is perfect every time! Most people will not want to spend $699.99 for a lawnmower, however, this one is worth every penny! I actually look forward to cutting my grass every week, mainly because I have pride in my home, but also because mowing the lawn is an absolute joy with this product! Since I already had personal experience with this type of mower, the knowledge I have gained over the years will definitely help me keep this one for maybe 20 Years! Thanks Honda!!!
