This is my second Honda Lawn mower in 20yrs. Yes, the first lasted 20 yrs (motor is running great just back wheels need parts).
I am sold on Honda lawn mowers. They mulch extremely well with the dual blade system. My new mower has the composite deck which is very slick and will not hold the wet grass. I could not wait to mow with the new mower but we had rain all day Saturday. The first break in the clouds I fired up the mower in mulch mode and cut away. No problems what so ever. The larger motor on the HRX series really handles the tall grass. The new drive system works great, even my 12 yr old daughter had no problems mowing my mother in laws yard (wet grass also) and was able to mow at her own pace.

This Mower bags grass like a gorilla on steroids. The bag is super easy to get off and on. Ball bearing wheels glides effortlessly across the lawn, while switching hands in turns is seamless and easy with drive features that respond like a dream. Pulling the mower backwards is easy as the forward drive releases very well. Over all this mower is very well made and performs like you would expect for a Honda. Has a gas shutoff valve, gasoline strainer insert, quite motor and Lots..of Power. The handle bars are even adjustable for your comfort. I give it 5 stars easily.

totally impressed. Replaced my 12yr old craftsman Briggs and Straten. Treated myself to a Honda self propelled after heart surgery at 63. Easy setup out of the box. First pull start with minimum effort. Easy mowing without a sweat. Great cut and it sucked everything up on the first yard cleanup of the spring. the toughest thing was getting the grass catcher bag on its frame. Love mowing the lawn again. Just keep fresh high test gas and stabilizer for years of great performance.

This Honda, lawn mower, has to be the BEST ! lawn mower I have ever owned, and I have owned my fair share of them, over the years.
The suction this lawn mower has, is amazing ! and the mulching feature is amazing ! Love it, easy to use, I really like the blade brake, if there is one thing I hate to do is start the lawn mower every single time, you let go of the handle, to move a object out of the path, or dump the grass bag.

Mower mows well, but bag design leaves a lot to be desired. It culets grass were bag hooks up, every
time the bag is emptied it has to be cleaned out. Also while you do this bag will not stand on it's own
because there is no frame in the lower half. I guess I was spoiled by owning an Airen before this.
Much better bagging and swivel tires up front. Honda would be number one if it had these.
Try again Honda!

This is our first Honda and have had Toro products in the past. I was impressed with the quality of the product right out of the box! I added oil and gas and the mower started first pull! This unit is light, powerful and fast. I was very impressed with how much better this unit mulches in comparison with my old Toro unit.
The only cons that I can think of would be the throttle device looks and feels very cheap, I think I will go to the dealer and see If they can fit it with something more durable. I didn't like the power response from the throttle device as well it seemed as if it were delayed.

I had a Harmony 215 that I bought in 2002 and lasted 13 yrs. I only put regular maintenance to it. Now it died: the transmission broke and it costs me $400 to get it fixed...no way Jose! So I got now the HRX2175VYA. So far so good but I think it needs some adjustment on the speed control. Low speed is over 4MPH and full high speed I have to really run behind it!! Let's see what happens. I have 25 more days to use it and hopefully it works well, otherwise can't let the 30 days return warranty expire (5/15/15).

Starts first time but engine oscillates until warm up (normal for Honda mowers)! So don't think the mower is bad like I did! I didn't know it so returned the first mower. Also this first mower I owned with a fuel shut off valve. Valve turned even with fuel line is on and 90 deg against the fuel line is off.
Mower easy to maneuver and I set the direct drive dial to maximum and just used the thumb lever to control walking speed (much better then Toro mowers there the whole handle must push in as you puch the mower.
I set mower to 100% mulch but spaces between the blocking vane allows a few hands full of grass to get in behind it where it shouldn't be.
When mower starts to hit tall grass mower blade speed stays constant but mower walk speed slows down for some reason. A few times mower left a few areas of uncut grass but just backed up over it then continued. A few times I did notice drive wheels spin a little a few times when I was going up my hill. Didn't even need self propel when going down hill.
I didn't use the grass bagger yet but inspected it and found part of the bag was sown to itself improperly so will go back to HD and exchange it.
The mower handles well similar to my Toro so I don't know what all the fuss was and I'm 6' and handle was fine for me. One tank full of gas was fine to mow my 1/3 acre yard. Great for 1/4 gallon tank.
Like the no paint no rust lightweight plastic deck. My Toro Deck was aluminum bot paint started pealing off. The first mower I overfilled the cap and some gas spilled in the plastic deck and it seamed to dull the shine a little (was surprised). Always use none ethanol gas - luckily I have a gas station selling it 2 miles from my house! Ethanol absorbs water and degrades rubber and plastic showing up more and more in small engines and can clog up and leave films on carburetors requiring replacement not covered under warranties!
Some Honda mowers the wheels can bind when changing height. I lift the mower deck when I am changing height settings. For Fescue lawns max height of 4" is recommended for maximum health and drought resistance. I only lower right before aeration and seeding.
Washed mower by turning on its side in the grass just like I did with my Toro after mowing with the fuel Fill on top side and already mostly empty so fuel wont come out the vented cap. Then blew off with leaf blower and ran engine so moisture burned off.
PS. My Toro lasted 10 years (paid $500) but self propelled gear box rusted and stripped out and had stopped working properly for some time, but engine still started and ran fine. Toro self propel needed repair a few times - was the weakest link. My parents 2 stroke Lawn Boy with aluminum deck lasted over 20 ears but it did start to smoke later years when it was started up. Those were the Made To Last,Made In The USA Good Old Days!
Hope This Honda Can Do It!

Just tried out my new mower last night... Wow.. What a cut.. I have owned Toro in the past.
This mower blows it away. One pull start.. Awesome power. Literally will make you run with the mower if you go max with the self propelled lever.. The twin blade cut is amazing and the bagging power of the mower is excellent. It litterally sucked up all the old grass from last year.. Didnt have to thatch like I used to. I got it at Home Depot on Sale for 399.. Worth every dime.. Literally look forward to mowing now.. Love it..

This is the first Honda Lawn Mower I have ever purchased. Its strong motor, 5 1 year warranty sold me on this particular unit, as did my high expectation of Honda being a good quality mower. Seeing that many of the commercial yard people use them, I thought, "they know a thing or two", Right? So I dropped over $600 bucks on this mower and here is what I got in return. The mower ran good for a year and half. Over the past 6-9 months it has had some problems starting until recently, after I shut it off and went to restart, the mower would not turn over at all. I checked everything on the mower that I possibly could and could not get it to start. I even waited a week and gave it another try. Since I had poor experience with some of my previous mowers and not them not wanting to start, I decided to approach this mower a completely different way, "by the book" so to speak. In fear of having problems with this mower, as I did with my past mower(s) I followed the book/manual from day one. I always utilized fuel stabilizer (Stabil), used fresh fuel if sat to long, even despite having the fuel stabilizer I would dump any fuel over a month old. I cleaned the mower after every use and to avoid build up on the carburetor I would run the mower out of gas prior to storing. In addition; I kept the spark plug new, probably replacing more than needed to, changed oil multiple times a year, always checked my oil, replaced and cleaned air filter and always kept the mower in my finished garage/office and never outside. I went above and beyond with this mower and my wife thought i was downright CRAZY the way I took care of/babied it. She just didn’t understand that having a lawn mower not start when you want it to is very frustrating, hence the "by the book" approach this time around. Well, the "by the book" mentality and care did not matter to the mower, or HONDA Corporation, as I just took the mower in for repairs a couple weeks ago and am having to pay for repairs on mower less than 3 years old that is supposedly under a 6 year warranty. After speaking with reps over at Honda and them speaking with the repair shop, both have deduced that mower is damaged and this damage was “MY FAULT” (Honda’s words exactly). Allegedly, the gas I used in the mower caused the intake valve to stick, breaking the valve, the rocker and wearing out the lobe on the camshaft. Also, the carburetor is shot. This damage was not the result of faulty engineering/craftsmanship by the manufacturer and was caused by bad fuel. Due to the cause being fuel related the repair is not covered under warranty. I live here in southern California and only use 91 octane in the mower, that I purchase from Cheveron, Mobile or 76/Conoco-Phillips. The same goes for my cars. I told the Honda rep this and I got the “through one ear and out the other” response. I even told them how I have been maintaining the mower and got the same response! The “I really don’t care response”. At the end of the conversation the Honda rep stated; the best Honda can do is pay for parts and I must take care of the labor, which per the shop and Honda was not going to exceed $150.00. As if this makes me feel better. The Honda rep went further on stating; “due to the cause of the damage being bad fuel, Honda would not typically cover anything (parts or labor) and the consumer in this situation has always paid 100% of the repairs. At this point I was thinking to myself, “this company/HONDA does not want stand behind their warranty and are doing everything they can to avoid paying for any of it. I should have just bought a Lawn Boy, or some $200-300 mower and why did I buy this P.O.S. Honda with a useless 6 year warranty. As the day goes on and the terrible experience I am having with Honda and the repair shop goes through my mind, I cant help but feel that Honda and their preferred repair shop are not being truthful to me and that the damage may have not been caused by what they are claiming it was caused by. Now, I feel like both are trying to make an easy dollar of me and who knows what is really going on. Im thinking, if they can’t stand behind their warranty, or don’t want to, how else are they going to get out of warranty repairs. This situation is a perfect example, just tell the consumer/me that the damage was caused by bad fuel and that damage is not covered under warranty. How am I to know that they are telling the truth. I only know what I have done to the mower, which was baby the heck out of it. How does this happen when you follow the manual. Maybe Honda should not sell products that can’t handle the fuel coming out the gas pumps, assuming that’s what really happened to my $600 mower. Anyhow, I apologize for this long review, but consumers need to know that HONDA is going to try to WORM/WIGGLE their way out of warranty repairs and do not let the warranty dictate your decision to buy a lawn mower from HONDA, cause you may end up in this situation. This whole experience is a total drag! I really hoped to be saying that Honda Corp. took care of me when i was in need and stood by their warranty, but thats just not happening. Honda is making a $150 mistake. At this point, I cannot recommend a Honda lawn mower and I will update this if things change.

Old mower had blade halt without stopping engine. Now I have to drag the new mower over rocky spots by force because leaving it running would suck up rocks.
The inside area is full of nooks and crannies that cause damp grass to clot up.
The speed control set at it's lowest level still moves the mower too fast.
I have just under 30,000 sq ft of lawn and have only used the product once. Review may change after 3-4 more mowings.

I purchased this new mower last December and used it for the first time on March 20, 2015. It starts with the first pull and runs like a charm. It is easy to learn to how to use. The dual blades mulch the grass finely. The self propelled works very well. Thank you Honda for your quality equipment!

We're sorry to hear you are disappointed in your mower. Your engine showed clear signs of fuel deterioration; specifically high levels of varnish. Today’s fuel has a fairly short shelf life, and unfortunately, bad gas can quickly cause issues in any small engine.
We do have a number of tips to help you avoid fuel related issues in the future, Check out Honda’s fuel recommendations here: http://powerequipment.honda.com/lawn-mowers/fuel-recommendations

I loved my reel mower bunches. But I now that I have this Honda lawn mower I found out I was infatuated with my real mower and I have found true love with this Honda lawn mower. My yard looks like a park!!! I want to cut the grass again because the ease of operation but it cut perfect the first time, I'll have to wait another week to experience this satisfaction that I feel right now. I almost want to cut the neighbors yard. Out of the box I added the oil to the mower as well gas two pulls and away I went .

I've owned every kind of lawn mower (tractor, reel, push reel, rotary, front throw) that has ever been made. The Honda HRX217VKA is without a doubt the finest piece of lawn and garden equipment I have ever owned. It starts on the first pull every time. The double blade makes the grass look amazing. In addition, the blades shred the clippings into smaller pieces so I have to dump the clippings about half as much as my previous mower. The best feature of the mower is how it handles wet grass (which we have a lot of in Seattle). The mower cuts through wet grass without clogging and without having to double cut like most mowers.
I have a side hill in my back yard and the SmartDrive system works great, even when the bag is full. In addition, the ability to control the speed is awesome. I wish I could give the mower 10 Stars. Thanks to Honda for making such a great product!!!

Your hrx mover is a over all a very good mover except the bagging. I like to bag when grass gets tall or is wet. When bagging the problem is when you empty the bag and the engine is running all the grass clipping blow in your face. Also the lip where the bag rests fills up with grass clippings and has to cleaned every time you empty the bag or else the bag will not stay in place. Another thing the bag drops a lot of clipping on the ground even when the bag is only a quarter filled it will not fill to the back of the bag. Your bagging feature has to be improved if I ever buy another Honda.

we purchased a Honda lawn mower, model HRX2172VKA from Home Depot in Lewisville, Texas on June 13, 2013. we took it to Smith Farm and Garden who is the Honda dealer. They said the fuel filter was missing and this is what caused the motor to burn out. we did not remove a fuel filter, it must have been missing from Home Depot. Home Depot has a 30 day warranty and would do nothing and Smith Farm said that Honda would not honor the warranty also. we paid $651.00 for a lawn mower that didn't even last a year. Is this fair? I hope that no one buys Honda mowers and experiences this same problem. I thought Honda had a better name than that but I guess I was wrong

We're sorry to see you are unhappy with the performance of your mower. Leaving uncut grass can be a problem for any mulching mower, but the problem generally worsens at higher cutting heights and when the grass is dry. There are several things you could try to improve the cut quality: lowering the cutting height, bag, or use the Versamow system to bag and mulch at the same time. Increasing vacuum usually helps, which is why the problem is less likely to occur when allowing some or all of the grass to enter the grass bag.
We would suggest trying to adjust the Clip Director knob to one notch below full mulch. It won't make a huge difference in the amount of grass being bagged, and it should help with the cut quality.
Again, we're sorry you are disappointed, and we hope this helps!

I bought the electric start for my wife money was no object . The handles and safety features are confusing and do not fit her hands. ( Even the pro down the street has his strapped down with duct tape...)
The mower get's bogged down in heavy grass and quits. This usually denotes a good time to scrape the underside of the deck with a putty knife. (this is the beginning of a dead battery. It will only start so many times.
Then there are the trees and shrubs. They hit the throttle and drive handles, so the engine stops and the drive goes int to slow.
It is hard to maneuver for me and harder for my wife. when you come to a tree or fence you must drag the whole mess and all the back to you. (The making for a hot bath for the sore back you will receive.)) Making the reason you spent all that money for drive unit a moot point.
All in All if you have a mile of straight lawn that is not too deep this is the unit for you. But if you live in the real world I would consider something else.
Hi Steve, we're sorry you're having a poor experience with your mower. It sounds like you actually have a different model, an HRX217HZA. We have a video that might help you if you are finding the handles and the Cruise Control hydrostatic drive to be confusing:
We hope this helps, and again, we're sorry you are unhappy with your mower.

I just upgraded from a 12 year old Honda Harmony self-propelled mower that the deck finally rusted through. Comparing the two, some things are the same, the Honda workmanship and the long warranty. The things that are different are the large increase in power. I mowed with my old mower a few days ago and then again with the new mower. The conditions were the same, but it was so much easier and took a lot less time with this mower.
In western Washington, we mow lots of wet grass in the spring. Thins thing has the power and bagging system to handle theses conditions and win the composite deck, no worries about rusting out the deck.

After moving to Florida with my brother in law next door, I decided I wanted a good lawn mower that walked leasily and cut good. After doing some research I purchased the HOND HRX217VKA machine.I agreed from the beginning that I would do the mowing and yard work. Both of our properties have backyards that are on hills that back up to the lake. I recently brought my HONDA Mower to a Honda dealer because it wasn't walking propery on the hill. I found myself having to push the machine instead of walking and mowing. The dealer was very rude and took them 2 weeks to get back to me. When the finally did get back to me they told me the repairs are not covered under the warranty because of accessive wear. I paid $650.00 for this machine and cut 2 lawns a week and I'm being told excessive wear. Are they crazy or what. A machine of this quality should be build a lot better that that. After 2 years, excessive wear. CUSTOMERS BEWARE. THERE WARRANTY DOES NOT MEAN A THING. All tough I love this mower, I think my days of owning HONDA'S are over. THEY HAVE THERE INTERESTS COVERED AND YOU THE CUSTOMER WILL GET STUCK WITH THE REPAIR BILL. They want me to pay $410.00 for these repairs. They must really be crazy. I will pick up my machine tomorrow from the dealer and have it fixed independently or I will fix it myself.

We've owned/used this mower for 2 years.
Pros: Amazingly easy, consistent start. Uses less gas than any other mower we've ever owned. Self-propel system is easy to use. We have a place where a neighbor's Spruce tree hangs over the fence and is very difficult to mow around/under. I can walk to the side and simply use my index finger to maintain pressure on the drive paddle. Could never do that with the comparable Toro mower we owned previously. Also does an amazing job of mulching in heavy/dense grass, leaving no rows of grass clippings like the Toro would do in similar situations.
Con: The only con is that in long grass our unit will leave a few random blades of grass uncut. Never does it on "normal" cuttings, but if I let the grass get too long, it will definitely do it if the grass is dense in that area. Annoying, but if I have to choose between that and the rows of grass left behind by other mowers, I'll take this.

I had a new Honda mower for several months when the auto choke failed to open on starting in the fall of the year. Bad missing and smoke. Later the engine would not start at all. A neighbor in my area had the same mower with the very hard to start problems after a year or so. They took their mower to a Honda recommended service center that did not fix the hard to start issues, and they ended up giving the mower away. I had a Honda lawnmower for 12 yeas with a manual choke and it started on the first or second pull every time. The only time it went in for service was to replace the worn out wheels. I must say that Honda Motor Company has come a long way in the past 13 years! But sadly ,in the wrong direction. Be careful with this auto choke!! Also, be very careful on who does any warranty work on your mower!

I bought this because of the reputation for being one of the most powerful walk behind mowers you can buy. I have Bermuda grass that was very tough on my Lawnboy w/6.75 B&S motor but not with the Honda. The Honda starts easily and has more than enough power for my high maintenance Bermuda grass. My only minor issue with the mower is 2 things.
1. Grass will blow past the versamow into the rear discharge chute, only alittle bit though.
2. Offer blade brake with the smart drive.
Also the the smart drive works great.
